VITA - Free Tax Preparation

February 4, 2012 - April 15, 2012

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Location: Grandview - Fireside Room

Fast, free and accurate: Grandview's Financial Stewardship Committee will again partner with Milligan College and host a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site at the church on Saturdays during tax season, starting Feb. 4.

Returns will be prepared and submitted electronically, all for free, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. each Saturday in the Fireside Room, for anyone from the community earning less than $50,000 a year. Grandview members and attendees can also participate regardless of income.

Dozens of people saw Christ's love at work in a tangible way during last year's VITA partnership, as trained and IRS certified tax preparers, most of them Milligan students, offered free tax preparation for qualifying individuals and families.

Milligan business professor Harold Branstrator, himself a former IRS employee, is training the preparers this month, and will be overseeing the project. According to the IRS website, “Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country.”

The Financial Stewardship Committee hopes to blanket some of south Johnson City's moderate-income neighborhoods with flyers promoting this opportunity. The more participation the better, because sadly, many people in this income bracket allow tax preparation businesses to charge them for doing their returns, and also to charge exorbitant interest for a “refund anticipation loan” that gives them a portion of their return about a week before they would receive it anyway. Often, using these services results in more than $200 of a person's refund winding up in the hands of businesses when they are eligible to have their taxes filed for free.

Additionally, the stewardship team hopes to point participants to resources for good financial stewardship in their own lives, including making it easy for them to open a bank account if they don't have one so they can get their refunds quickly through direct deposit.

Please support this effort with your prayers, and if you'd like to help in any other way, contact Jeff Keeling at (423) 773-6438.

Location: First United Methodist Church in Johnson City

Thanks to those of you who attended the Volunteer Coordinator Training last Thursday evening. If you were not able to attend the training, but are interested in a refresher course, we plan to offer additional trainings for volunteer coordinators throughout the year. You are also welcome to attend the upcoming training for volunteers.

Volunteer training will be Sunday, Feb. 12th, from 3:00 to 5:30 pm at First United Methodist Church in Johnson City. Volunteers from all host and support congregations who have not attended a training session, or volunteers who would like a refresher course are encouraged to attend. Please rsvp the number of people from your congregation who plan to attend by Wednesday, February 8th. If additional individuals express interest in coming after the 8th, that is fine. The rsvp will help us in projecting the size of the group and preparing information packets for the training.

If you have questions about this training, don't hesitate to contact me. See below for directions and parking instructions to First UMC.

First United Methodist Church, Johnson City is located at 900 Spring Street (1 block South of the Salvation Army). Please park in the parking lot on the back side of the building off Pine Street. The training will be held in the basement of the fellowship hall of the education building.
