So Nice We're Doing it Twice: IHN Returns
July 23, 2010

The host church that follows Grandview on the Interfaith Hospitality Network rotation has run into circumstances that keep them from being able to participate next week. So, we are pleased to announce that Grandview will be able to step into help.

Patsy Glover, from IHN, will coordinate the volunteers for this additional week. The volunteers will come from a network wide call for help. If you are able to help, just give Patsy a call at the IHN offices (929.9967). You can also contact them through their website by following this link.

A special thanks goes out to all who volunteered to welcome our guests.

We're Here
June 27, 2010

It was a long day of buses, airplanes and airports, but we're here in Atlanta trying to catch a little rest before we head out in the morning.  If all goes well, we'll be in shortly after lunch on Sunday.  See you then.

Coming Home
June 26, 2010

We're spending our final minutes here at Casa Verde.  We'll be heading to the bus station soon, then the airport, then Atlanta.  We're excited to tell you about all we've experienced and seen.  Please pray for us as we travel today.

As a news item for all you parents reading, we have decided to head out from Atlanta early tomorrow morning.  The only service we could attend doesn't start until 11:00 and we really need to beat the heat in the van that doesn't have good AC.  That should put us back closer to 1:00 or 2:00, but we'll call as we near JC.

Looking forward to seeing everybody.

Pictures
June 24, 2010

Here are a few pictures from our trip so far...

We're nearing the finish line and everything is coming together nicely.  The building you see in some of the pictures has been our big project and we're excited because it is nearing its finish.  When it does tomorrow, we'll try to post a few pictures of the finished product.  Continue to pray for us as the last day dawns.  Thanks so much.

Well...
June 22, 2010

That's the most appropriate word to describe my day and the day of 14 other Grandviewites as we made our way to the well digging project.  It started with an hour drive out to a much more rural area outside of Puebla.  We arrived at the top of a long ravine down which we hiked to the spring where the well would be dug.  Our day consisted of three distinct phases.  Phase one had us transporting large stones from a creek bed to the well site.  Phase two was a bit more relaxing.  We collected small pebbles to be used in the mixing of concrete.  For much of this stage we were able to sit in the shade near the creek and pitch pebbles into buckets.  Phase three was the most difficult, requiring us to hike back up to the top of the ravine and carry down large bags of gravel.  All in all, the day at the well was exhausting but rewarding.  It exposed our group to a much different part of the country and allowed us to participate in a minstry being sponsored by a local church very interested in meeting the needs of their local community.

The other 13 members of our group stayed here at the Campus House (they'll travel to the well tomorrow).  Much of the day here was spent setting posts and and framing in the shelter in the back yard.  It was meticulous work, but the progress is evident.

We're now in the middle of our work week, which is consistently the most difficult part of trips like these.  Many of the kids are experiencing true fatigue for the first time (perhaps in their lives), but the attitudes remain good.  Continue to pray that we will find divine reserves to push us through the fatigue and help us find the energy to continue to do quality work.

Still no pictures today.  Those may have to wait until our return.  Thanks for continuing to dwell with us in spirit.

Let The Work Begin
June 21, 2010

On the first day...we worked...hard.  It's difficult to describe all the things we have done today to those of you who haven't been here, but it was the kind of day the pioneers (or some other group renowed for their especialy hard work) would have been proud of.  Some of the highlights were...

A group of us building three new benches to be used around the property.  These were also stained and made to look very nice.

A large group working to tear down a three foot perimeter around the old outdoor shelter to prepare for the buliding of a larger outdoor shelter (one of the good problems Casa Verde is having is the quickly increasing shortage of space).  The work on the outdoor shelter will begin tomorrow.

A number of us painting the second floor of Casa Verde where worship takes place each week during the school year.  The appearance of this space continues to improve.

A small group of guys digging a 3x3x3 ditch to help alleviate a small flooding issue on the first level of La Casa Verde.  Another group worked to dig trenches in which bricks were laid to create parking spaces on the property.

And I'm sure there were other jobs happening outside of my purview, but the whole group worked energetically and enthusiastically.  They also showed a lot of "fleximility".  This is a word we coined for our mission trips this summer to encourage the twin virtues of flexibility and humility.  Both are needed here and have been on display.  We're all pretty tired, but not so tired that we didn't get to go enjoy a little Lucha Libre again this year (for the uninitiate that is the name of professional Mexican wrestling).

Tomorrow is another day and your prayers are much coveted.  It was hotter today than any day during our visit last year and you could certainly feel a dip in energy around 2:30 today.  We'll need all we can get tomorrow.  15 of us will be going off site to help in the construction of a well.  The remainder will go on Wednesday.  It's allegedly a really hard job.  We're all excited about it though.

We continue to feel your prayers and your presence with us.  We continue to listen to the things that God is teaching us through our work and our relationships.  We're anxious to share it all with you.  I'll try to upload some pictures tomorrow to give you an idea of what things look like here.  Til then...

Ooooooooh, Mexico!
June 20, 2010

Our day started early this morning, but after a full day and a thousancd odd miles we're here in Puebla.  Technically, we're in Cholula, but who's counting.  We made it with no complications today, and the ease with which we arrived this year was not lost on those who arrived at midnight last year.  Thanks to everyone for your prayers for safe travels.

We've joined forces with a few students from Atlanta Christian College and a few members from the Hay Street UMC in Fayetfille, NC.  There are about 45 people now gathered who are all excited to get to work tomorrow.  The kids are already hard at work making new friends, but your prayers for the relationships we're working on (old ones and new ones) are much appreciated.

There's a lot of work to do, but I'll save those details for another day.  In the meantime, Nathan and Erin say "Hi", actually more than hi.  Elsa, too, says "Hi" in her own ten month old way.  She's indeed beautiful and was the belle of the ball as soon as she arrived before dinner (especially among our girls).

If you're still reading, thanks for thinking of us.  We do feel your presence with us.  Keep praying.  Pray especially for the eyes of our heart may be opened to God's presence among us.  This is a young and energetic group in whom I'd like to see God powerfully work.

Here in Atlanta
June 19, 2010

It's late, but hopefully not too late to let you know that we're here in Atlanta.  Save for a slight delay on I-26, the trip down passed quickly.  We have nicknamed one van the Arctic (it only seemed to cool to below freezing temperatures) and the other the Sahara (with the little air conditioner that couldn't), but thankfully we'll leave them behind tomorrow.

Atlanta's been great.  After arriving and unpacking here at Southwest, we headed for Piedmont Park and the swimming pool.  The pool was a welcome relief from the Atlanta heat, especially for those who had traveled down on the Sahara.  After the pool, we dined at Willy's, a tex-mex grill just outside the park.  Finally we were off to the ballpark, Ryan's home away from home.  If you didn't catch Sportscenter, the game saw the Braves take an early 3-0 lead before the Royals tied it up in the 7th.  Heading into the bottom of the ninth, the game was tied 4-4.  As Troy Glaus came up to lead off the ninth, I leaned over to Josh Ramsaran and said "I've never seen a walk off home run before."  Well, now I have.  It was fantastic.

We're heading to bed now to arise around 6:00 tomorrow.  As most of you are gathering for worship tomorrow, we'll be off into the wild blue yonder.  We should touch down in Mexico City as you are sitting down for lunch.  Please be praying that God would be at work in our hearts and our work.  We'll try to keep you updated each night.
